Has your child been recently suffering from bad breath? Bad breath, or halitosis, can be extremely embarrassing for both adults as well as kids. You can get rid of bad breath by asking your child to brush and floss properly. A quick mouth rinse can also do the trick. However, if it persists it is recommended to see a pediatric dentist. It could indicate something worse.

Causes of Bad Breath in Kids

Bad breath can diminish your kids’ confidence and negatively affect their oral hygiene. Identifying the causes can help you to deal with the problem better and find when to visit your pediatric dentist. Let us take a look at these causes.

Dry Mouth

A dry mouth can be the main reason behind your child’s smelly breath. Kids often forget to drink enough water which reduces saliva production in their mouth. Saliva is the primary key to eliminating odor-inducing bacteria. Hence, dehydration could be a source of bad breath.

Irregularities in Oral Routine

Poor oral hygiene can lead to several issues and halitosis. Improper brushing can lead to the accumulation of plaque and tartar. The bacteria present in this sticky substance can create bad breath. Hence, it is imperative to keep an eye on your child’s oral hygiene. A decline in their oral condition can create several problems.

Sinus Issues

Is your kid suffering from a sore throat or blocked nostrils? It could be a sinus infection. There is excessive fluid buildup in your child’s nasal passage which could be the reason behind your child’s bad breath. If your child’s halitosis persists, have your child visit their pediatric dentist.

Medication

Medicines have always been linked to halitosis. Several medicines and antihistamines are available in the market which is a leading cause of dry mouth. If you notice that your child‘s breath has started smelling bad after the consumption of new medication, then you need not worry. It will all go back to normal after the course of the medication is over.

Certain Food Items

There are many food items that can cause bad breath in your children. Food rich in garlic and onions can lead to bad breath. You must rinse your child’s mouth after they consume meals that contain these items.

Tonsil Inflammation

Halitosis can be due to swollen tonsils as well. An infection in the tonsil can lead to white pockets and your tonsil will look red. Bacteria can accumulate in the white pockets leading to a bad smell in your child’s mouth. You must get the tonsils examined by an ENT and follow proper instructions.

Object Stuck in The Nostril

Kids have the habit of putting unusual objects in their nostrils. It could be legos, beads, or any toy which they play with. These lodged objects if left undetected can lead to bad breath in your child’s mouth. If you think your kid has done something like this then you must make all arrangements to get the lodged object out immediately.
